30,000 m³ Duck Manure Biogas Project – Shunwo Agriculture, Zhucheng, Shandong
A turnkey duck manure biogas resource-recovery center in Zhucheng, Shandong Province, with a total anaerobic digestion volume of 30,000 m³. We supplied and commissioned the complete system: process design, anaerobic digester tanks, desulfurization and decarbonization purification units, spherical double-membrane gas holders and PLC automation.

1. Project Overview
Located in Zhucheng, Shandong Province, this project is one of China’s benchmark facilities for large-scale waterfowl-farming manure resource recovery. It centrally treats duck manure and farm washing wastewater from intensive meat-duck operations, and is equipped with a complete chain covering biogas purification and upgrading, double-membrane gas storage and organic fertilizer processing.
Zhucheng is one of China’s core meat-duck farming clusters. Duck manure carries high moisture and high organic load; if stacked in the open it pollutes soil and water, generates odor and breeds disease. The project builds a closed-loop model of “duck farming → anaerobic digestion for biogas → biomethane / power utilization → digestate made into organic fertilizer and returned to farmland”, serving as a demonstration model for the environmental upgrading of Shandong’s waterfowl industry and circular agriculture.
2. Scale & Process Configuration
| Digestion capacity | 30,000 m³ total effective volume; multiple vertical anti-corrosion digester tanks with special high-organic-resistant coating and insulation, suited to the cold-winter, humid climate of the Shandong Peninsula for stable year-round operation |
| Feedstock | Duck manure and farm washing wastewater from intensive meat-duck farming; a small amount of corn straw can be blended to adjust the C/N ratio and prevent acidification caused by the high nitrogen content of pure duck manure |
| Gas storage buffer | Multiple large spherical double-membrane biogas holders for peak shaving, balancing daily feedstock fluctuations and supplying stable gas flow to downstream purification and utilization units |
| Biogas purification | Multi-stage wet desulfurization towers, dewatering buffer tanks, CO₂ absorption/stripping columns and precision filtration units; upgraded methane purity meets biomethane pipeline-grid requirements; an elevated flare safely burns surplus gas during maintenance or overpressure events |
| Product utilization | Biogas: upgraded to pipeline-grade biomethane, used for on-site power generation, or boiler heating — switchable modes. Digestate: dewatered and composted into granular organic fertilizer for nearby fruit, vegetable and grain farms |
| Automation | Plant-wide PLC central control: remote monitoring of tank temperature, pressure, pH, biogas composition and equipment load; automatic tank heating at low temperature; overpressure and leakage interlocks; minimum on-site staffing with remote O&M |
3. Key Advantages for Duck-Manure Scenarios
1) Anti-acidification digestion process for high-nitrogen duck manure — Custom compound inoculum tolerant of high nitrogen, combined with precise straw-based C/N blending, keeps fermentation pH stable. Optimized mixing and water-distribution inside the tanks prevents sedimentation and compaction of duck-manure sludge, so no frequent tank cleaning is needed.
2) Highly corrosion- and humidity-resistant equipment — All digesters, desulfurization towers and piping use anti-corrosive carbon steel or stainless steel; outdoor units have rain/sun protection layers; the double-membrane material is UV- and weather-resistant, extending outdoor service life and cutting corrosion maintenance.
3) Modular multi-unit purification — The purification system is laid out in modular units that can be started, stopped and serviced individually without interrupting overall gas supply. Wide load-adjustment range keeps purification performance stable through seasonal swings in manure output.
4) Large double-membrane storage cluster — Multiple spherical holders operating in parallel keep gas supply stable even during short farm stoppages or reduced feedstock input. Excellent membrane gas-tightness keeps fugitive methane emissions very low and the plant odor-free.
5) On-site circular farming design — The plant reserves space for digestate storage and dewatering/processing, so organic fertilizer can be delivered directly to surrounding farms, saving long-distance transport. Waste heat from digestion is recovered for duck-house heating in winter and fertilizer drying.
4. Project Value
1) Environmental compliance for waterfowl farming — Resolves the four classic pain points of intensive duck farming: random manure piling, leachate polluting groundwater, odor nuisance and disease risk. Anaerobic digestion sharply reduces COD, ammonia nitrogen and pathogens; effluent and exhaust indicators meet Shandong’s livestock-farming environmental control standards, avoiding production-halt and penalty risks.
2) Multiple economic returns from the farming cycle — Revenue and savings come from pipeline-grade biomethane sales or on-site power and heat generation (cutting purchased gas and electricity), organic fertilizer sales, manure-treatment service fees from nearby smaller farms, and potential provincial biomass-energy and circular-agriculture subsidies.
3) Industry demonstration value — As a 30,000 m³-class duck-manure-specific biogas resource-recovery center, the project provides a replicable manure-treatment model for waterfowl farming clusters across China and fills the gap of mature large-scale solutions for high-nitrogen poultry manure.
4) Low-carbon social benefits — Biogas replaces coal and fossil natural gas, significantly cutting greenhouse-gas emissions; organic fertilizer returns nutrients to the soil and reduces chemical-fertilizer use; the project creates local jobs in manure collection, plant O&M and fertilizer processing.
